Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton is expected to sit out six to eight weeks after fracturing his upper right arm Tuesday while trying to score from third base on a popup that didn't leave the infield at Detroit.
Hamilton tagged up on a foul popup near the Tigers dugout in the first inning. Third baseman Brandon Inge and catcher Victor Martinez ran after the ball, leaving the plate unprotected when Inge made the catch.
Martinez was able to take a throw from Inge while scampering back in time to tag out a diving Hamilton.
Hamilton left the game and the team says he has a non-displaced fracture of the humerus bone at the top of his arm, just below the shoulder. Hamilton isn't expected to swing a bat for a month.
Nationals put Zimmerman on DL
The Washington Nationals put third baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained abdominal muscle and recalled catcher Jesus Flores from triple-A Syracuse.
This is Zimmerman's second trip to the DL since arriving in the majors in 2005. The move is retroactive to Sunday.
Zimmerman is hitting .357 with one home run and four runs batted in.
Manager Jim Riggleman said he doesn't know how long it will take the injury to heal, but he hopes to have Zimmerman active in about 10 days.
The injury first occurred during spring training, although Zimmerman said he couldn't pinpoint the exact timing. It was re-aggravated last week and he sat Sunday against the New York Mets.
Astros' Mills, Rodriguez are suspended
Major League Baseball suspended Houston Astros Manager Brad Mills for one game and reliever Aneury Rodriguez for three games after their weekend ejections against the Florida Marlins.
Both were also fined undisclosed amounts.
Rodriguez is appealing his suspension and may play until there is a ruling on the appeal. Mills, as manager, has no appeals process.
Rodriguez was ejected in the ninth inning Sunday when he hit Gaby Sanchez with a pitch.
