PHONE 5, IPAD 3 FEATURES? APPLE EXPLORING CARBON FIBER ENCLOSURES

While iPhone 5 may be delayed for the Fall, it doesn’t mean we have to stop talking about its features. A report from Macrumors and 9To5Mac suggests that with the recent hiring of Senior Composites Engineer Kevin Kenney, Apple might be exploring carbon-fiber enclosure:

“Apple has long been rumored to be experimenting with carbon-fiber enclosures for their future laptops and iOS devices. The benefits of carbon fiber over traditional materials has included high tensile strength, low weight and low thermal expansion.”

Add this to the long list of clues pointing to carbon-fiber eclosures. This includes a patent indicating that Apple has been doing research on carbon fiber composites and another report that Apple has iPad 2 prototypes with carbon fiber backings.

Furthermore, “Kenney has been working indirectly with Apple for years. Apple filed a Carbon fiber patent with his name on it in 2009.”

Two devices that would most likely get carbon-fiber includes iPad and MacBook Air. However, there’s no telling why Apple wouldn’t apply this to their line of MacBook Pros and iPhones as well. After all, iOS devices get thinner each year and carbon-fiber will certainly help Apple continue this tradition. What do you think
