You remember record stores don't you? They are magical places where you can browse and purchase albums in person — plastic wrap and all.
Yes, record stores still do exist, and many are full of tunes that just aren't available in a certain iRetailer. But the real reason for physically going to a record store is for the experience — they're full of culture, colorful characters and, of course, excellent musical selections.
Saturday is Record Store Day, a celebration of the independently owned record stores in the U.S. and abroad — more than 700 total. At participating locations throughout the day, these stores will be selling exclusive vinyl and CD releases, whether they're regional, small-run or coveted limited editions, as well as hosting parties, artist meet-and-greets and more.

We imagine that these parties will be something like the final scenes of the classic movie Empire Records, including impromptu rooftop performances of "Sugar High," sweetly sung by Reneé Zellweger and Liv Tyler aimlessly searching for love in the shortest skirt ever. Now that's an experience you just can't get online.
TIME has put together a list of ten great American record shops for you to check out. Or visit RecordStoreDay.com to find a participating store near you.
