Catherine Zeta-Jones was recently hospitalized for bipolar disorder, specifically bipolar II disorder, and docs are weighing in on what the disorder means for the actress. Experts say bipolar disorder symptoms can differ based on the level of diagnosis and the symptoms endured for Catherine are less severe than if she'd been diagnosed with bipolar I disorder.
STRESS FROM HUSBAND'S CANCER WOKE UP BIPOLAR DISORDER
After a year of coping with husband Michael Douglas' throat cancer, Catherine will undergo her own treatment for bipolar II disorder, different from biploar I disorder in that the symptoms include "excessive energy" and overt optimism pulsed with "being flighty," says Dr. Thomas Wise, professor of psychiatry at John Hopkins Medical School.
BIPOLAR DISORDER SYMPTOMS: DIFFERENCE BETWEEN I AND II
Symptoms of the more severe form of the disorder, bipolar I, include severe mood swings leading to an inclined state of hypomania and, according to the disorder page on MayoClinic.com, can cause "difficulty in your job, school or relationships" due to lack of personal and emotional control resulting in "severe and dangerous manic episodes."
TREATMENT USED FOR BIPOLAR DISORDER I
For Zeta-Jones, docs say she's likely to be treated with drug therapy and psychotherapy to balance out the disorder and some believe the stress from Douglas' cancer battle may have triggered the disorder which would have otherwise stayed dormant. With propoer treatment, experts say the actress will be able to return to work and lead an otherwise normal life.
