Texans quarterback Matt Schaub is out indefinitely with a “significant’’ right foot injury and will miss at least Houston’s next game in two weeks.
Multiple news outlets reported yesterday that Schaub has an injury to the Lisfranc joint in his foot, an injury that could result in season-ending surgery.
Coach Gary Kubiak would not say if Schaub would miss the rest of this year. “There’s a lot of things reported,’’ Kubiak said. “He’s going to be in a boot throughout this week, and then the evaluation process will continue.
’’ Kubiak said the team was bringing in a specialist from Indianapolis to evaluate Schaub, and the quarterback would fly to Charlotte, N.C., later this week to undergo further examination.
Kubiak said Schaub was injured on a sneak coming out of the end zone late in the second quarter of Houston’s 37-9 victory over Tampa Bay Sunday. Schaub stayed in the game but threw only three passes in the second half.
“He’s got a significant foot injury, he’s going to miss some time,’’ Kubiak said. “But we’re going to do everything we can to get it evaluated correctly and see if we can get him back on the football field.
The Texans (7-3) have won four in a row and share the AFC’s best record with Pittsburgh heading into their bye week. Kubiak said veteran Matt Leinart will start at Jacksonville Nov. 27.
Leinart has appeared in just one game, with no pass attempts, since signing with the Texans in 2010. He went 7-10 as Arizona’s starting quarterback from 2006-09. “They know that I work hard and I study hard and I’m prepared very well,’’ Leinart said. “We’re going to take this and go game-by-game and I don’t think much is going to change.
“My heart goes out for [Schaub]. But he knows and everyone knows that in this profession, things happen, and the next guy has to step up. That’s my job and my responsibility.’
’ Schaub, acquired from Atlanta in March 2007, has started every game for Houston since the beginning of the 2009 season. The Texans already have lost sacks leader Mario Williams (chest) to a season-ending injury. They are hoping to have star receiver Andre Johnson back for their next contest after Johnson missed six games with a hamstring injury.
Vick has broken ribs Michael Vick broke his two lower ribs on the second play of the Eagles’ loss to Arizona Sunday and didn’t tell anyone, proceeding to play through the pain and have an awful performance (16 of 34, two interceptions).
“He didn’t say anything, not a word. He’s a tough nut,’’ coach Andy Reid said yesterday. “He said he really just blanked it out and played . . . and really didn’t think twice about it.’’
Vick’s status for next Sunday night’s game at the Giants is uncertain. He missed three games last year with a rib cartilage injury.
Obscenity ‘a mistake’ The NFL is looking into an Internet video that shows Jets coach Rex Ryan using an obscenity while angrily responding to a fan at halftime of New York’s loss to the Patriots Sunday night.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said that the league is aware of the 49-second video shot by a fan, which shows the Jets walking off the field. When Ryan appears, someone is heard yelling, “Hey, Rex, Belichick is better than you,’’ referring to Patriots coach Bill Belichick. Ryan looks up and tells the fan to “shut up’’ while also using an obscenity.
“I obviously, you know, made a mistake,’’ Ryan said yesterday. “I was full of emotion and just popped off, and obviously I know I represent the National Football League and I know I represent the Jets. I know it was a mistake and I apologize. This is who I am. I made a mistake.
It is possible Ryan could face a fine from the team or the league. No more Moreno The run-heavy Broncos will play the rest of the season without back Knowshon Moreno, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Sunday at Kansas City. Denver promoted running back Jeremiah Johnson from the practice squad to fill Moreno’s roster spot. Denver also finished out its win over the Chiefs without
leading rusher Willis McGahee (hamstring), but McGahee is expected to practice this week . . . The Bengals’ top cornerback, Leon Hall, is out for the season with a torn Achilles’ tendon. Tests after Sunday’s loss to Pittsburgh revealed that the tendon had detached from the bone. He’ll have surgery this week. He had played in all 74 games since he was drafted by Cincinnati in 2007. The Bengals promoted cornerback
Brandon Ghee off their practice squad to take Hall’s roster spot . . . The Bills lost center Eric Wood for the rest of the season after Wood tore a ligament in his right knee Sunday at Dallas. He is hoping to be ready for training camp next summer. Buffalo linebacker Chris White (knee) also will have season-ending surgery . . . The Jaguars placed cornerback Rashean Mathis (knee), guard Eben Britton (back), and backup linebacker/special teams standout Kyle Bosworth (hand) on injured reserve . . . Bears left guard Chris Williams had surgery to repair a dislocated wrist and won’t return this season . . . Redskins receiver Leonard Hankerson will miss the rest of his rookie season with a dislocated hip and torn labrum. Hankerson had his first 100-yard game Sunday against Miami.
