China opposed UN resolution on Libya

BEIJING: China has said it was opposed to the UN resolution for creating a no-fly zone over Libya. Its decision was prompted by a desire to preserve its relationship with several countries coming under the shadow of the Jasmine revolution, an official suggested.

"Considering the concern and stance of Arab countries and the Africa Union as well as the special situation in Libya, China and some countries abstained from voting on the draft resolution," foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a statement on Friday.

China earlier joined India and three other countries in keeping away from the voting on the UN resolution for creating the no-fly zone, which was passed by 10 countries including the United States and United Kingdom voting in favour. Germany, Russia and Brazil are the other countries that stayed away from voting.

"We oppose the use of force in international relations and have some serious reservations with part of the resolution," Jiang said. The crisis in Libya should be resolved through dialogue and other peaceful means, she said.

China is in favour of the United Nations respecting the sovereignty and integrity of Libya under the UN Charter and international laws, she said.

"We expect Libya to restore stability at an early date and avoid an escalation of armed conflicts and worsening humanitarian crisis," Jiang said.
