Steam users may have noticed their friends playing something new this weekend: The long-awaited total conversion mod, Black Mesa. In development since 2004 and finally released September 14th , Black Mesa is a modification designed to update Half-Life's game play and graphics to the standard created by the sequel, Half-Life 2. As such, it requires certain files that are now freely available for any Steam user.

Video: Black Mesa released Black Mesa has completely overhauled the textures, maps, enemies, and music of the original seminal Valve title. Early reception has been positive from the community, which had begun to doubt the mod would ever be released. Some fans had even speculated that the Black Mesa mod would not become available until Valve finished the ever-elusive Half-Life 3. Now that Black Mesa is out, fans are wondering if Half-Life 3 is not far behind.
