Derek Holland's mustache catching Rangers fever

By Paul White, USA TODAY ARLINGTON, Texas — Last year, antlers caught the fancy of Texas Rangers fans. This year, it's a mustache

At least that's what Rangers pitcher Derek Holland calls what might be mistaken for a pencil line across his upper lip. The baby-faced lefty might have a better chance to grow antlers.

"Over three months of work here," says Holland, who has called it the worst mustchae in baseball. PHOTOS: Texas Rangers gallery It's also know as the Dutchstache, a connection to his nickname, the "Dutch Oven." Holland -- Dutch, get it? Fans are showing up at Rangers games wearing fake mustaches. Holland and teammate Ian Kinsler went to the Dallas Stars home opener on the eve of the AL Championship Series and, when they were shown on the video screen, Kinsler reached over to stroke the stache and the crowd went wild.

The Dutchstache also has its own Twitter account (@Dutchstache). "It's slowly but surely making its way out," says Holland, who began the project in July during a winning streak. "I'm going till the end of the year." Getting an extra week and half by making the World Series probably isn't going to help. And San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson has little to fear. "A beard for me probably would take three years," Holland says. "We tried this already at the beginning of the season. It just didn't work out. It's very bad." See photos of: Texas Rangers
