Meteor shower created by Halley’s Comet peaks tonight

A meteor shower spawned by history’s most famous comet will peak this weekend, and the show could be dazzling for observers with clear skies, experts say.

The Orionid meteor shower will reach its zenith overnight from Saturday to Sunday (Oct. 20-21) as Earth plows through debris shed by Halley’s Comet on its path around the sun. The most impressive display should come a few hours before dawn Sunday, when our planet hits the densest patch of Halley’s detritus.

"Flakes of comet dust hitting the atmosphere should give us dozens of meteors per hour," Bill Cooke, head of the Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA’s Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., said in a statement.

The moon will be just five days removed from its new phase on Saturday night, and it won’t show up in the pre-dawn skies early Sunday. So bright moonlight shouldn’t drown out many streaking meteors this weekend, researchers said.

The Orionids — so named because they appear to originate near Betelgeuse, the second-brightest star in the constellation Orion (The Hunter) — have historically produced about 20 meteors per hour during their peak. However, the shower has been especially impressive in the last half-decade or so, Cooke said.

"Since 2006, the Orionids have been one of the best showers of the year, with counts of 60 or more meteors per hour," he said.

Skywatchers who want to learn more about the Orionids and how to observe them this weekend can join Cooke and his team in a live web chat overnight Saturday, from 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. EDT (0300 to 0700 GMT Sunday). Go to this web page at the appointed time to participate.

The Orionids are one of two annual meteor showers produced by icy pieces of Halley’s Comet . The other shower, called the Eta Aquarids, peaks each year in early May. Halley’s Comet returns to the inner solar system every 75 or 76 years, and it's bright enough to be seen by the naked eye. The comet’s last appearance in our skies came in 1986, and the next is due in 2061.

In 1705, English astronomer Edmond Halley suggested that a comet spotted 1682 was the same one that lit up the sky in both 1531 and 1607. He further predicted it would be back in 1758. When this last appearance did in fact come to pass, the comet was given Halley’s name.

Teaching Kids to Brush Their Teeth

Kids in general either hate brushing their teeth or they simply couldn’t care less. However, it is important to teach your kids how to brush their teeth to avoid dental and other health problems. With a little patience, creativity, and a handy tool, you should be able to get your kids to brush their teeth in no time.

For preschoolers

It’s relatively easy to teach preschoolers, as long as it’s fun for them and is done through rhythm and rhyme. Let your kids know that there are germs that we can’t see living on their teeth and it’s important to get rid of them. You can even make a song about teeth brushing.

When teaching your kids how to brush their teeth, first show them the proper way to go about it. Once you have demonstrated the up and down, round and round process of brushing teeth, hand your kids their brushes and let them try. Use a safe kids’ step stool to help them reach the sink. Choose one that is self-retracting so that when your kids are done using the sink, the step stool automatically retracts underneath the sink and out of adults’ way. Once they are able to do the whole brushing process themselves, make the event and exciting and joyous one. Clap and cheer for your kids. Tell your other family members how good the kids were and have them cheer for the children as well. Have your kids show other family members how they too can brush their teeth.

Helping Your Kids Become Creative Thinkers

As parents, it is a common denominator to have the desire for our children to grow up prepared to any challenges their lives have to offer. Mothers, just like my own mother, are always anxious that they are making the right decisions for their children or guiding their children make the right directions every single day as early as possible to get a head start in this world. This is not a bad thing at all. In fact, this is the very manifestation of unconditional love that many writers such as myself love to write about.

I’m not exactly a mother yet but I have often wondered that if I have to start a family soon, what values can I impart my children to at least say that I’m proud of what I have accomplished later on. Paranoid much? No, not really. If you watch the news or read the daily news and see crimes being committed, I’m sure most of you have tried to analyze and understand the inner workings of the criminals’ minds. And you also realize and agree with experts that the common thieves and common rapists are products of broken homes. The basic values have not been instilled and these individuals suffer from low emotional intelligence. Probably as children, they haven’t been guided to think creatively and solve problems according to specified rules. These individuals become lawbreakers because they think that there are no other ways to solve the problem they are faced with. Discipline and self-control are concepts they have trouble grasping.

I’m not an expert so I won’t be dwelling much into how criminals become criminals. Instead, I’d like to focus on the idea of rearing our children to become creative thinkers and effective problem solvers. If you’re not aware of this yet, there is a strong correlation that exists between music training and brain development. Mental development is crucial in helping our children become better citizens because obviously, everything happens in the brain. I love music. It has helped me so much in my life in dealing with problems, and emotional outbursts. And so when I heard about researches regarding music and the brain, I became interested. I learned that music literally light up all the areas of our brain. Our brain have left and right spheres where only a certain region is utilized in most activities but with music training, all of the regions are utilized. Advanced technology such as PET scans and MRI imaging have made it possible to monitor the brain while the subject is engaged in listening to music or playing an instrument. And the entire brain “lights up” when we do so.

So in line with this, it is a great idea for your children to engage in musical training. I’m sure you are already familiar with some parents making their child listen to classical music as early as possible. The idea is there but I suggest kicking it up a notch. You Lead,I Follow - The Non-Leader

A lot of focus has been placed on being a good leader. In fact, there is more literature about good leadership than any other management topic. This is because leadership covers not only management, but it involves teams, motivation and even our social lives.

But what of the people who consider themselves non-leaders?

If you are contented to follow, you are, by definition, a follower. Yet, the reality is that no one is a 100% follower. Everyone, bar none, will at one time or another be in a leadership position.

“Anyone knows a good restaurant around here?”

A timid hands goes up, and Timid Tim says, “I do. Follow me.”

No! That is not leadership! Yes, I can hear those protests loud and clear. Now, Timid Tim starts walking, turns a corner, goes down a flight of stairs, turns another corner all the while muttering to himself about how wonderful that restaurant is. Then, when he arrives, he is alone. Somewhere along the way, he manages to lose the entire group.

Sure, that is not LEADERSHIP, but even this simple example of leading a small group serves to show that at some point, you have to lead.

When speakers talk about leadership and how everyone should be trained and about how everyone is a leader, there are many scoffers. They think that this is all about selling more seminars. Or it is just hot air to encourage the “others” so they don’t feel too bad. Hardly.

In our many capacities, we are followers in some and leaders in others. It is inevitable. Have you ever followed someone with an IQ less than yours simply because he knew where the toilet was and you don’t?

Leadership skills are especially important at home. At work, there is always some one ready to step up to the plate. We all want to excel. Be promoted. Be noticed. One man’s faltering is another man’s elevator.

But at home, there is just you and your family. Think about that. The option for someone else to “step up to the plate” are not too plentiful in the home.

So, the next time you have a chance to attend a “leadership workshop” or a leadership seminar, don’t pass up the chance just because you think you are not a leader.
